El Dia de Los Santos - Nov. 1

Tuesday was something of a holiday. It follows the tradition of el Dia de los Muertos (the day of the dead). Here it is called El Dia de los Santos (saints). The tradition is that the spirits of deceased family go to their family homes on this day. However, evil spirits try to get in the way of that. Somehow, building kites and flying them keeps the evil spirits at bay. Here are a number of photos with brief comments.



                              We came across a number of groups roasting hogs on the spit.

                                       I would say they got everything they could from this guy.


Now for some pictures of the "kites" and the crowds. This is what the streets looked like on the way to the kite building and display area.


Here are some photos of the crowds inside the display area (a soccer field next to a cemetery).





                   You can see some of the large kites behind the people in the second photo.

          

                     Let's take a few looks at some of the impressive "kites." This one was the tallest. 
As you can see below, some get quite elaborate.





                                                             It was a fun day but tiring.

The Trip Home - 2/08/2024   I thought I might hand out the last of my Jesus cards on one of the flights home so I had Mary take this photo. I am glad to have this picture to remind me of an important part of my Guatemala mission. I handed out approximately 700 Jesus cards in just under 18 months in Guatemala. In the beginning, I gave one to each cashier with whom we interacted in a store and with others who helped us. As we walked, I would hand one to various people we encountered if I felt prompted. Each time I gave one out, I pointed to my name badge and commented it was because of Jesus that we were there.  We were very excited to be met at the SLC airport by April, Emmett, Alli, Brooke and Maggie. It was a happy reunion and an opportunity to play with grandchildren. With that, I end the blog for our Guatemalan mission. Serving that mission truly has blessed us.

  Quetzaltenango Temple and Lake Atitlan - February 2023 Wednesday, we went to Quetzaltenango, over four hours away, to attend the temple and to see that part of Guatemala. .It was a beautiful day and we very much enjoyed our time in this beautiful temple. From there, we drove over 2 hours to Lake Atitlan. It is a beautiful, large lake which has several old volcanoes around it. Here are a few photos of where we stayed.  This is one of 6 cabins in an area close to the beach. Above is a view from the sitting area outside the upstairs bedroom. It was a beautiful area. The dining room table and chairs were quite unique, having been taken from large trees in the area. I thought I would throw in a picture of the living room and kitchen for memory's sake. Thursday morning, we took a boat ride across the lake to a town they call San Juan. This is the area, walking distance from our cabin, from which we launched.
