Possible Book of Mormon Locations in Current-day Guatemala

One of the mission presidents in Guatemala, Lenard Brunsdale, was an emergency room physician who developed a very deep passion for identifying the current-day geography of Book of Mormon locations and events. He made a presentation to the senior couples in the Area which really piqued my interest. Later, I was able to get an electronic copy of his most recent book ("Atlas of Book of Mormon Geography- Brunsdale 2020").


During Dr. Brunsdale´s ~ 20 years working with other scholars and enthusiasts he/they devloped the above map. As you can see, some very key locations from the Book of Mormon are located within today's Guatemala. These include Zarahemla and Bountiful.

While the top researchers don´t agree on a number of possible locations, they all are/were in complete agreement on the location of Zarahemla and Bountiful. (The book mentioned above covers a couple of theory models.)

Are we absolutely sure of these locations? No. However, the compelling evidence that we are serving in the vicinity of key Book of Mormon locations touches my heart. Every day, I interact with people who are likely decendants of Lehi (as well as of others with whom his decendants have mixed). I believe we are seeing the fulfillment of the promises made to Lehi and others regarding the gathering/saving of their posterity.

The Trip Home - 2/08/2024   I thought I might hand out the last of my Jesus cards on one of the flights home so I had Mary take this photo. I am glad to have this picture to remind me of an important part of my Guatemala mission. I handed out approximately 700 Jesus cards in just under 18 months in Guatemala. In the beginning, I gave one to each cashier with whom we interacted in a store and with others who helped us. As we walked, I would hand one to various people we encountered if I felt prompted. Each time I gave one out, I pointed to my name badge and commented it was because of Jesus that we were there.  We were very excited to be met at the SLC airport by April, Emmett, Alli, Brooke and Maggie. It was a happy reunion and an opportunity to play with grandchildren. With that, I end the blog for our Guatemalan mission. Serving that mission truly has blessed us.

  Quetzaltenango Temple and Lake Atitlan - February 2023 Wednesday, we went to Quetzaltenango, over four hours away, to attend the temple and to see that part of Guatemala. .It was a beautiful day and we very much enjoyed our time in this beautiful temple. From there, we drove over 2 hours to Lake Atitlan. It is a beautiful, large lake which has several old volcanoes around it. Here are a few photos of where we stayed.  This is one of 6 cabins in an area close to the beach. Above is a view from the sitting area outside the upstairs bedroom. It was a beautiful area. The dining room table and chairs were quite unique, having been taken from large trees in the area. I thought I would throw in a picture of the living room and kitchen for memory's sake.
