Trip to Taxisco - September 9, 2023

We headed out early on a Saturday afternoon to get to Taxisco in time for a 4:00 p.m. Branch activity. A trip that normally takes us 2 hours, took 5 and we missed the activity (even though we had our assigned meal contribution with us). One side of the freeway was closed for construction and an accident occured in the other.  Here are pictures of vehicles stopped in front of us and in back of us for over an hour. In the US, the Highway Patrol does everything they can to keep traffic moving safely around an accident. That doesn´t seem to be the focus here. 





The next day, we approached the church building but the street had been cordoned off.  A building across the street from the chapel must get used for funeral viewings on occasion.


They obviously could not get all the people wanting pay respects into their building, so they just cordoned off the street and set up chairs in the street. This street normally gets a lot of activity on Sundays but people just seem to work around things like this.

The Trip Home - 2/08/2024   I thought I might hand out the last of my Jesus cards on one of the flights home so I had Mary take this photo. I am glad to have this picture to remind me of an important part of my Guatemala mission. I handed out approximately 700 Jesus cards in just under 18 months in Guatemala. In the beginning, I gave one to each cashier with whom we interacted in a store and with others who helped us. As we walked, I would hand one to various people we encountered if I felt prompted. Each time I gave one out, I pointed to my name badge and commented it was because of Jesus that we were there.  We were very excited to be met at the SLC airport by April, Emmett, Alli, Brooke and Maggie. It was a happy reunion and an opportunity to play with grandchildren. With that, I end the blog for our Guatemalan mission. Serving that mission truly has blessed us.

  Quetzaltenango Temple and Lake Atitlan - February 2023 Wednesday, we went to Quetzaltenango, over four hours away, to attend the temple and to see that part of Guatemala. .It was a beautiful day and we very much enjoyed our time in this beautiful temple. From there, we drove over 2 hours to Lake Atitlan. It is a beautiful, large lake which has several old volcanoes around it. Here are a few photos of where we stayed.  This is one of 6 cabins in an area close to the beach. Above is a view from the sitting area outside the upstairs bedroom. It was a beautiful area. The dining room table and chairs were quite unique, having been taken from large trees in the area. I thought I would throw in a picture of the living room and kitchen for memory's sake. Thursday morning, we took a boat ride across the lake to a town they call San Juan. This is the area, walking distance from our cabin, from which we launched.
